Out of Range: A Story from the Ridge

The morning air on the ridge line was crisp, sharp with the scent of pine and wet loam. Four miles back from the main logging road, cell phones had turned into useless slabs of glass and metal. For Mark and his small crew—setting up a weekend backcountry camp while scouting timber routes—dead zones were nothing new, but sudden autumn squalls were.

Mark unclipped his Midland GXT1000VP4 from his chest strap, slipping the soft ear hook of the boom mic over his ear. With a click of the push-to-talk button, his voice cut crisply through the earpiece of his partner, Sam, who was nearly two miles down in the river basin setting up the main supply shelter.

“Sam, clouds are building heavy on the western ridge,” Mark said. “Looks like that storm front is moving faster than forecasted.”

“Copy that, Mark,” Sam replied, his voice coming through loud and clear despite the thick tree canopy and elevation drop. “I’m securing the cook tent now. Did you catch the latest weather alert?”

Before Mark could answer, the GXT1000VP4 chirped—its automatic NOAA Weather Scan had locked onto a localized hazard alert broadcast from the National Weather Service. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for their exact county, with high winds expected within forty minutes.

Without missing a beat, Mark switched to hands-free eVox mode. With both hands free to secure gear, haul timber, and lash down heavy tarps, Mark stayed in constant contact with Sam. No dialing, no waiting for cell towers to connect, and no missed calls. Just instant, crystal-clear voice contact every time someone spoke.

When torrential rain began to pelt the ridge half an hour later, the JIS4 waterproof radios handled the downpour without a stutter. By the time the storm hit in earnest, the camp was locked down, gear was dry, and the team was sitting safely around the camp stove, listening to the weather updates broadcast right from the radio.
